Delivering the Bicker Fen Grid Connection

Force delivered concrete bases, drainage, ducting and a Digital Relay Room.

Force was appointed to deliver the civil installation works for a new customer connection serving Bicker Fen Solar Farm within the active Bicker Fen National Grid 400kV Substation.

The project called for a wide range of civil engineering capabilities, with works taking place around live infrastructure and alongside an evolving programme. Our team has delivered reinforced concrete structures, deep drainage, site-wide ducting and troughs, and the construction of a new Digital Relay Room building.

Despite delays outside Force’s control, including a change of Principal Contractor midway through the programme, the team has responded to design changes and an accelerated schedule while keeping the works on track for completion within the agreed timeframe.

What We Delivered

Concrete Bunds and Equipment Bases

Force constructed multiple concrete bunds and bases to house the equipment required for the new connection. More than 150m³ of concrete was used across the works. The bunds were then tested using around 60,000 litres of water, confirming that each structure met the required standard with no leaks identified.

The project included the installation of a site-wide drainage system to manage oily water from the new transformer and equipment bunds.

Advanced temporary works were required to support the excavations, including a sheet-piled excavation for a four-metre-deep interceptor tank.

Once complete, the system will connect to National Grid’s monitoring equipment and include a fully alarmed setup to support safe operation across the site.

Troughs and Ducting

Force installed site-wide cable troughs and ducting to connect equipment bases with the Digital Relay Room control building. The network also supports cabling entering and leaving the new connection footprint, creating the routes needed for the site’s power, control and monitoring systems.

Digital Relay Room Building

The new Digital Relay Room is a key part of the connection and houses separate rooms for National Grid and the end user.

Force delivered the full building construction package, including reinforced foundations, brickwork, joinery and roofing. Our team also completed the first-fix electrical installation, preparing the building for its control and protection equipment.

Working inside an active 400kV substation requires careful planning, strong communication and a clear understanding of the risks involved.

Force provided several capabilities through one delivery team, reducing the need for multiple contractors across the civil works. This gave the client a single point of responsibility for the concrete structures, drainage, ducting and building construction.

When the project faced delays, design changes and a change of Principal Contractor, our team adapted quickly. We reviewed the revised requirements, supported the accelerated programme and continued moving the works forward without losing focus on safety or quality.

CONCLUSION

Restoring Strength at Height

Concrete gantry remediation within a live HV environment.

Force Contracting Services was appointed to deliver gantry remediation works on a concrete gantry structure that had started to crumble and break away.

The works required a controlled, safety-led approach due to the condition of the concrete, the height of the structure and its close proximity to live high-voltage equipment. With areas of deterioration present across the gantry, FCS was tasked with carefully breaking out the damaged concrete, treating the exposed reinforcement and reinstating the structure with a clean, durable finish.

OBJECTIVES

The primary objective was to remediate areas of deteriorated concrete across the gantry, ensuring all loose, damaged and crumbling material was safely removed back to the reinforcement.

Once exposed, the rebar needed to be treated with a steel protectant to help prevent corrosion before the concrete repair material was applied. The works also had to be completed to a high standard visually and structurally, with smooth edges and a consistent finish achieved throughout.

A further key objective was to complete the works within a planned outage, while maintaining safe working practices at all times due to the live high-voltage environment.

What We Delivered

FCS carried out the concrete breakout works using handheld breakers, removing all affected areas back to the rebar. The exposed reinforcement was then treated with a steel protectant to help reduce the risk of future corrosion.

Following preparation and treatment, Monomix was applied by hand to reinstate the damaged areas. Our team used hand tools throughout the repair process to ensure a neat, controlled application and a smooth, consistent finish across each section of the gantry.

The works ranged from ground level up to approximately 15 metres high, requiring careful access planning and controlled working methods throughout. MEWP positioning was a key part of the delivery, ensuring the team could safely access each work area while maintaining safe proximity from the live system.

why force?

This project required more than concrete repair capability. It demanded a team with the experience, control and understanding required to work safely within a high-risk operational environment.

The gantry works were carried out within 5 metres of live NG busbars, making planning, positioning and communication critical at every stage. FCS managed the height, access requirements and live-system proximity with safety as the overriding priority.

The planned outage was also shortened due to unforeseen circumstances, increasing the pressure on the programme. Despite this, FCS completed the required works in a timely manner, without compromising on safety, finish or quality of delivery.

CONCLUSION

Force Contracting Services successfully completed the gantry remediation works within a challenging high-voltage environment and a reduced outage window.

Through careful planning, controlled MEWP positioning and a safety-first approach, FCS delivered the concrete breakout, rebar protection and Monomix repair works to a high standard.

The project demonstrates Force’s ability to deliver specialist remedial works in complex live environments, where access, safety, programme pressure and quality all need to be managed together.

Bridge Parapet Installation Across 120m Deck

Delivering the installation of 96 precast parapet units across 120 metres of bridge deck was not simply a lifting exercise. It required disciplined planning, precise coordination and the experience of a highly skilled lifting team operating within a live infrastructure environment.

Each unit weighed approximately 9 tonnes and had to be lifted, rotated and placed under controlled conditions. On a programme where the road is scheduled to open in May, every movement on site needed to be carefully managed to maintain safety, protect programme and ensure quality installation.

Working Safely Within a Restricted Live Site

Operations of this scale take place alongside other ongoing activities across the site. Access routes must remain clear, plant movements continue, and multiple teams operate within the same work area.

To maintain safe working conditions, the lifting operation was supported by detailed temporary works designs and a fully engineered lifting strategy. Crane positioning, exclusion zones and lift sequencing were carefully planned to ensure each movement could take place safely within a restricted footprint.

Clear communication across the site was essential. Every stage of the operation was briefed in advance, ensuring that all operatives understood the sequence of works and the safety measures in place.

Planning and Preparation Behind the Installation

Successful lifting operations begin long before the crane arrives on site. For this project, preparation focused on developing a structured plan that controlled each stage of the installation. This included:

– Detailed temporary works design
-A fully engineered lifting strategy
-450 tonne and 110 tonne cranes working in sequence
-Coordinated working within a restricted site area
-Precise delivery scheduling for the precast units

Each of these elements played a role in ensuring that the installation could progress smoothly without disruption to the wider programme.

Precision Lifting and Placement

Each precast parapet unit required careful handling during installation. The units were lifted into position, rotated where necessary and guided into place by an experienced lifting team.

Controlled lifting procedures ensured that every movement remained predictable and safe. Banksmen, lifting supervisors and crane operators worked closely together to maintain clear communication throughout the operation. Every lift was planned. Every risk assessed. Every step carried out with the attention to detail required on a safety critical infrastructure scheme.

The installation is progressing ahead of programme, demonstrating the value of strong planning at the earliest stages of the project. Large Scale Deck Pour, Planning, Coordination and Skilled Delivery

Delivering a 500m³ concrete deck pour on a major overbridge was not simply about placing a large volume of material. It was about detailed planning, disciplined coordination and the experience of a highly skilled team working together under time critical conditions on a vast, live infrastructure site.

Safety and Coordination Across a Live Site

On a project of this scale, activities do not stop for a concrete pour. Multiple teams operate across the site at the same time, access routes must remain open, and plant movements continue throughout the working day. Every stage of the operation was carefully planned to maintain safe working zones and clear communication between trades.

Detailed method statements were prepared in advance, sequencing was agreed with other contractors, and traffic management was coordinated to protect both workforce and site logistics. A dedicated traffic coordination team remained in place throughout the operation, helping manage movements and maintain safe access across a large footprint. This level of oversight is critical when you are working alongside multiple interfaces and strict programme constraints.

Preparation and Skilled Operatives

The success of the pour was built on thorough preparation. The deck incorporated 180 tonnes of reinforcement steel, all fixed by experienced operatives who understand the technical standards required on national infrastructure schemes. Parapet stitch bars were positioned with precision to allow seamless installation of the precast parapet units at a later stage.

Every fixing was checked for alignment, spacing and cover before concrete placement began. Large volume pours leave no room for reactive thinking. Quality is secured in the preparation phase, through attention to detail and the competence of the people carrying out the work.

Understanding the Scale of 500m³

Five hundred cubic metres of concrete represents a significant single operation. To place that into perspective:

It equates to around 200 ready mix concrete truck loads delivered in sequence.

Around 80 average UK house foundations, assuming 6m³ per plot foundation.

Formed into a cube, it would measure close to 8 metres in height, width and depth.

Managing this volume requires precise logistics, consistent supply and continuous monitoring to maintain quality from first load to last.

delivering the pour

The operation was carried out using one of the UK’s largest mobile concrete pumps, a 62 metre Putzmeister, selected to provide the necessary reach and consistent flow across the entire deck. Two batching plants supplied the concrete to maintain continuity, reducing risk of delay and helping ensure a controlled, steady placement.

Two on site testing teams monitored quality throughout the pour, carrying out slump tests, temperature checks and cube sampling in line with specification. The entire 500m³ was placed and finished within normal working hours, without impacting programme and without compromising safety or workmanship.

Planning Drives Performance

Large scale infrastructure operations are determined long before the first wagon arrives on site. Programme sequencing, contingency planning, skilled supervision and clear leadership across teams are what allow complex works to be delivered smoothly.

The primary objective was to design and implement a comprehensive high-security perimeter system for a new restricted facility. This system needed to meet stringent security standards, integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure, and provide both physical and automated access control measures.

Key Deliverables

The project involved the installation of a robust security perimeter, incorporating Stronguard Crash Rated (PAS68) Palisade Fencing designed to provide a secure and visually cohesive barrier around the facility. Access control systems included two PAS-rated swing gates to regulate vehicular access, along with a 15-meter tracked sliding gate to accommodate larger vehicles and a pedestrian turnstile to manage individual entry. Additionally, extensive civil works were undertaken, encompassing foundations and bases for all security installations as well as comprehensive site-wide ducting to facilitate integration with the site security systems.

Implementation Details

Security standards were upheld through the use of PAS68-rated fencing and gates, ensuring resistance against vehicular attacks and aligning with industry best practices for critical infrastructure protection. All installations were designed to integrate with the site’s existing security systems, allowing for centralized monitoring and control. Furthermore, the selection of Stronguard fencing not only provided a high level of security but also complemented the modern architecture of the site with a sleek finish.

Force Contracting was engaged to install a robust security fencing system, incorporating key access points and high-security features. This project required meticulous planning and execution to address site-specific challenges and ensure seamless installation. The scope of work included:

Approximately 250 linear meters of 2.4-meter-high palisade fencing with a 300mm x 350mm concrete sill.
Installation of a 10-meter double-leaf gate.
Installation of a 3-meter double-leaf gate.
Full integration of the Harper Chalice PulseSecure system for enhanced perimeter security.

CHALLENGES FACED:

Presence of Earth Tape Throughout Trench: The discovery of underground earth tape along the trench line required adjustments to prevent disruption and maintain compliance with safety regulations.

Limited Working Space Near Battery Installations: The close proximity of the installation to battery units restricted access for machinery, requiring alternative solutions for fence erection.

Steep Embankments: The varying terrain posed difficulties in maintaining a level and structurally sound fencing line.

Coordination with Other Contractors: With multiple contractors on-site requiring access, some fencing panels had to be left out temporarily to accommodate ongoing works.

Solutions and Execution:

Adapted Post Locations: The team strategically modified post positions to work around the earth tape, ensuring compliance with safety regulations while maintaining the fence’s structural integrity.

Manual Handling for Restricted Areas: In areas inaccessible to machinery, fence components were manually transported and installed, ensuring precision and safety.

Ground Build-Up for Steep Areas: The embankments were adjusted using ground build-up techniques to create a stable base for fence installation, mitigating risks associated with uneven terrain.

Collaborative Approach with Other Contractors: Coordination efforts ensured work proceeded efficiently while allowing access for other teams. Temporary gaps were managed effectively to maintain security while accommodating site logistics.

Cheshire Based High Security Project

Force Contracting was tasked with completing a civil engineering project involving the installation of a robust security fence system. The scope of work included:

• Approximately 250 meters of palisade fencing, constructed atop a concrete sill.
• Installation of one 6-meter-wide double-leaf gate.
• Tiered elevations in two areas, incorporating three 300mm drops with additional strainers to support the upcoming installation of the Harper Chalice security system.
• A 30-meter bolt-down section with removable panels to facilitate future access.

This challenging project demanded precision, adaptability, and resilience in overcoming a variety of obstacles.

Challenges Faced

1. Adverse Weather Conditions: The team faced extremely poor weather, with temperatures consistently too cold for standard concrete pouring. This required meticulous planning and the use of specialized techniques to ensure the integrity of the concrete sill.

2. Limited Access Due to Concurrent Contractors: Other contractors were working simultaneously on the site, significantly limiting access to critical areas. Force Contracting coordinated effectively with all stakeholders to maintain progress and ensure safety.

3. Restricted Working Space: The fence line was situated just 300mm from existing structures, leaving minimal room for maneuvering equipment and materials. This constraint required precise execution and careful handling to avoid damage to surrounding structures.

Solutions and Outcomes

Adaptation to Weather: To combat the cold temperatures, the team utilized winter-grade concrete additives and insulated curing blankets. This ensured the concrete sill met all structural and quality requirements despite the challenging conditions.

Collaboration with Other Contractors: Regular communication and planning with other contractors minimized delays and allowed for efficient scheduling of shared access areas.

Precision Execution in Tight Spaces: Specialized equipment and careful manual techniques were employed to install the fence within the limited working space. The team’s expertise ensured precise alignment and structural integrity.

Flexible Engineering Solutions: Adjustments to the excavation plan and fence positioning were made in real-time to avoid disrupting the ducting and cables. This adaptive approach ensured project timelines were maintained without compromising safety or quality.

Force have been contracted to provide a bespoke compound security fence and access gates as part of a London Based Flexible Generation Project. Poor ground conditions made delivery of this project challenging, but as always we pushed through to produce exactly what was required.

In a testing environment and with poor ground conditions, Force have delivered individual reinforced bases to support the entire 400+ meter perimeter, providing a stable base for a secure site. Once energised, this be the largest operational BESS site in the UK, providing three times the energy storage capacity of the next largest project in the UK.

OBJECTIVES

Force were brought in by GE to take on the full civils package for their new onshore converter station — a critical part of what will soon be the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

This isn’t our first project with GE, and it shows. They needed a contractor who could handle complex civils work, deliver at scale, and coordinate closely with multiple stakeholders across a high-traffic, high-profile site.

What We Delivered

Over 4,000m³ excavated

6,330m³ of imported fill placed and compacted

1,600m³ of reinforced concrete poured

4,700m of ducting installed, including 2,000m of Cubis Multi-Duct

Initially, we removed the top 450mm of the bridge deck, in preparation for the new surface to be laid. Once this once completed, we mass poured over 100m3 of reinforced concrete to a power floated finish. This was finished with polysulphide jointing sealant which acted as a bridge between the 3 completed sections.

Next, we then built of the adjacent parapets to a nominal height along the length of the bridge deck. This was then completed with GRP coping stones along the length of the deck.

As a result of Force’s dedication to safety and attention to detail throughout the course of this project, JMS awarded us the Pride in Safety and Welfare Standards.
